King Tides Kickoff

65255501_10216466214025464_3635831408250847232_o

Come join us January 23rd at 6pm

King Tides Kickoff is an informational event about the King Tide Photo Initiative, a 10-year-old citizen science project that tracks and plans for sea-level rise in coastal communities.

During the program, a scientist speaks on a local coast issue – in the context of the year’s highest tides and/or our rocky habitat – and share how the partnership between OCMP and CoastWatch educates the public about King Tides using their photos to map the sea’s reach on land.

The public is invited of course, and Oregon Shores will be hosting with appetizers/snacks for this first-time event in Florence. RSVP to the Facebook event CLICK HERE.

Here are some tidbits about KING TIDES:

What causes king tides?

Tides are caused by the gravitational influence of the sun, the moon, and the earth on the earth’s oceans. When the orbits and alignment of the earth, moon and sun come into a particular relationship, the tidal range is at its greatest; low tides are especially low and high tides are especially high.

The term ‘king tide’ is used in Australia and in some Pacific Island nations and refers to tides that occur when the moon’s orbit comes closest to the earth, the earth’s orbit is closest to the sun, and the sun, moon and earth are in alignment, thereby increasing their influence on the tides. The term is becoming more commonly used in the United States. These tidal events are also known as perigean spring tides.

In Oregon, we are using the term ‘king tides’ to refer to the highest winter tides. These highest tides occur each winter when the earth is closest to the sun in its yearly orbit, and when the sun and moon are aligned so that their gravitational forces reinforce each other to have a particularly strong effect on the Earth’s tides.

For more information about tides, please visit: https://tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov/education.html.

Why are some tides higher than what is predicted?

Local weather conditions during a high tide event can greatly influence the actual observed water levels. If a low atmospheric pressure system or a winter storm coincides with a high tide, water levels could be measurably higher than the predicted level published in the NOAA tide tables. Predicted tides are for a specific point along the coast or estuary. Tide levels in nearby locations will probably be different from predicted tides, because of a variety of factors. For example, the shape of bays and estuaries can magnify the intensity of the local tides.

Shoe Drive for Florence

A Community Call to Action

We try to be an active part of our community, most of our staff is HOMEGROWN from Florence. As we check out public forums, we noticed a call to action from Nick. He had posted on the Let’s Talk About Florence, Oregon page. If you are not a member of this amazing community here is the link to join: https://www.facebook.com/groups/Lets.Talk.Florence/?ref=br_rs

He wanted to coordinate a shoe drive for adults, and children. We are looking for new, or gently used clean shoes. Please bring them during the drive hours.

All shoes collected Nick will donate to various local sources to help people in Florence have a good pair of shoes. KUDOS to NICK for the call to action and being a positive impact on our community.

He will be at the event, and you can meet him personally. We are glad we can help out with this wonderful cause.

For those who donate, the brewery would like to offer you a coupon for $1 off any HG 16oz BREW to be served via draft in our pub. You will receive it at the event, and it is good for that day.

We began to brew beer this week, we are now an officially licensed brewery!!

The federal licensing was done in October, and our state approval came in this week. All of us have been itching to get this project going. So as of today, Laurel Street in Florence smells LIKE BEER!!!

So, what exactly are we brewing???

It will all be out in the open by the grand opening on January 10th! Our VIP crew members will be the first to view and taste the brew. We have 20 members in our BREW CREW exclusive membership. Community Support

Community support for this project has been astounding. People from all over the country, as well as our local community, have been helping us support our dream come true.  From pledges to memberships we were able to raise over ten thousand dollars to get the brewery finished.

People have come by, called and have even sent snail mail.

We have been contacted by several news outlets, and we are excited to have an interview with newschoolbeer.com for the 2020s most anticipated breweries.

We LOVE COMMUNITY.  As the word gets our around Florence about our desire to bring the community into the pub, we have been getting FUN projects.

We had our friends from petal+branch come to our patio for a FLOWER SALE! This was such a fun event. These beautiful flowers pretty much SOLD out in one small event.

With hosting fun events like this, we learn more about the people in our hometown. petal+branch is a small business ran by Peggy Bradley. They are a small but mighty little flower farm.

Peggy’s Bantam Farm and a budding floral studio, petal+branch. Peggy has always loved flowers, growing them, arranging them. Peggy’s venture seemed like the perfect way to incorporate that into something she could do to ignite her passion and bring joy to others. Peggy’s mother instilled her love for the outdoors, nature and growing things. Peggy says she feels like her mom is right alongside her on this journey.

20190419_11491718904115.jpg
Peggy is a recent graduate of the Floret workshop 2019. Floret is a preeminent flower farm and the remarkable owner has been a major influencer and leader in the slow flower movement.  Just like our food, there is much interest in flowers being grown locally, ethically and sustainably. Here is a short video that talks about the new way of looking out where Peggy sources her flowers.
https://youtu.be/PEXs9UUgqqg

Peggy will also be back at Homegrown for another flower sale, so STAY tuned to our Facebook page on when she will return.   You can also catch up with Peggy on Facebook, Click Here to give her page a LIKE.
